Industrial Doctoral Research Component (procedure)

Procedure to obtain the Industrial Doctoral Research Component

The Industrial Doctoral Research Component (MDInd) is for theses initiated under Spanish Royal Decree RD 99/2011, and is added to the obverse side of the PhD certificate, subject to fulfilment of the conditions below. For more information on how to apply to join an industrial doctoral programme, click here.

  1. The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona will award the Industrial Doctoral Research Component, through the Standing Committee of its School for Doctoral Studies (see the Committee's calendar), whenever the following requirements are met.

    1. There is an employment or commercial contract in place with the PhD student. This contract may be executed by a private- or public-sector company, or by a public authority, which may not be a university.

    2. The PhD student, in collaboration with the UAB, has undertaken most of his/her research training in a company or public authority within an R&D&I project, which must be the subject of the doctoral thesis. The above must be demonstrated through a report ratified by the Standing Committee of the School for Doctoral Studies.

    3. The doctoral thesis is undertaken within the framework of a collaboration agreement between the UAB and, where appropriate, the research centre and/or hospital foundation, and at least one company, public authority or institution, for the express purpose of developing the thesis. This agreement is to include the university's obligations and those of the company or public authority, together with the process for selecting doctoral students. A model agreement can be found on this link.
For the collaboration agreement to be processed, a document in Word format must be drawn up, containing details of the project and the company, and sent to doctorat.industrial@uab.cat (including your full name, ID or passport number and NIU) for the university to fill in its own details and for the agreement to be ratified and signed.

    4. The PhD student has a thesis tutor designated by the UAB and belonging to the PhD programme, and a person in charge designated by the company or public authority, who could be, when applicable, the thesis supervisor or co-supervisor, in line with the regulations on PhD studies.

    5. The PhD student's workload on the research project is spread between the company or public authority and the university.

    6. The PhD student takes part in, among others, instructional activities to develop competences related to leadership, R&D&I project management, transfer of research findings, development of start-up companies and intellectual and industrial property.

  2. The Industrial Doctoral Research Component may be awarded only when the collaboration agreement was signed during the first academic year of research work.

Or, alternatively, your employment history, showing that you joined the company three years before depositing the thesis, if you have not been allocated any funding from the Generalitat for MDInd projects. (Added to the thesis project section of the online academic record).
On the thesis deposit form, it should be stated that the International Doctoral Research Component is requested.

The Standing Committee of the School for Doctoral Studies will assess the documents and may request further reports as needed.
